This was a fun commission for a science outreach project that my old friend Sofia Araujo was running. Fruit flies are used to model all sorts of behaviour that you might not expect from a tiny insect including the effects of one drink too many. The official name for the species of fruit fly mainly used in research is Drosophila melanogaster hence the subtitle. To find out more about the amazing ways that flies are used in research visit the Manchester fly facility page. They have loads of really useful and interesting information, some of it tailored for a general audience and some specifically for schools which explain the relevance to the curriculum and society. For example, if you want to find out more about the biological effects of alcohol (y’know, just asking for a friend…um…) take a look at this lesson plan which is even available in four languages!
